Behind the Scenes

He is referred to as "Evil Macaque" in the sets.
In Journey to the West, he is called the "Six-Eared Macaque". However, in Monkie Kid, he is commonly known as simply "Macaque" while the Six-Eared Macaque is his full name.
When revealed by the Buddha, the Six-Eared Macaque is said to have "a sensitive ear, discernment of fundamental principles, knowledge of past and future, and comprehension of all things."
In the novel, him and Monkey King had never previously met, whereas in Monkie Kid, they are old friends. The Six-Eared Macaque also acts as a metaphorical representation of the Monkey King's negative traits.
As a member of the Brotherhood, Macaque takes the role of the Macaque King, who was originally a separate character.
